Thanks for the responses.

I suspected that it was a problem with the provider/line but I wanted to
make sure before I called them.  Of course they don't 'support' Linux
and I don't have and windows computers to check the problem with.  I'm
sure their first line of defense will be to tell me it's a problem on my
end, but at least this way I will know that it's not with the drivers.

I downloaded the drivers from the site linked to on the
linux-usb.org/speedtouch site:
