Thanks for looking into this.
I'm running sphinx 1.1.3 on Windows with MikTex but my colleagues get the 
same error on OSX.

How did you create the latex file? I mean what command did you run?

I find suspicious the first part of the error message where it complains 
that

make latex

...
Markup is unsupported in LaTeX:
