you can wrap long lines by simply using the same indentation on all lines of the
list. In your case, the code should look like:

.. code:: rst

        * Dot point
        * another point
        * a really looooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooong point
          that I'd like to wrap for when in vim
        * but keep the dot point and "single line" for html and pdf.
        * like ``\`` in a shell script
