Hi Pieter I have submitted a PR to Sphinx https://github.com/sphinx-doc/sphinx/pull/6711 With it, xelatex would have been used by default (with an added fix see discussion at https://github.com/reutenauer/polyglossia/issues/306) This will be integrated hopefully into Sphinx 2.3.0 or 2.2.1 if there is such a release.
