James, Yes, there should be some advantage - the cooler the air you suck in, the more of it there is in a given volume, so the more petrol you can burn per cylinder-full. That is why turbocharged engines have intercoolers, since the act of pressurising the air increases the temperature substantially, so there is much to gain by cooling it down again. Sucking the air from the side of the radiator ensures that it is as cool as it can be. There may also be some 'ram air' effect from the forward-facing pipes, but somehow I doubt it is significant!!
