You should still be able to al least duct cooler air to the filter region from the
side of the radiator. That plus an extension to the heat shield so that it defelects
the hot air from the radiator away from the carbs might help a bit without going to a
full box. Saying that on my Contour (aka Mondeo) I fitted a washable filter in place
of the standard box and themanufacturer say it did not need any ducting as the air
temp under the hood is only a couple of degrees hotter than outside temp under normal
conditions on that car. OK at speed but not in really hot weather in slow/stopped
traffic I doubt it.

James,

Yes, there should be some advantage - the cooler the air you suck in, the
more of it there is in a given volume, so the more petrol you can burn per
cylinder-full. That is why turbocharged engines have intercoolers, since
the act of pressurising the air increases the temperature substantially, so
there is much to gain by cooling it down again. Sucking the air from the
side of the radiator ensures that it is as cool as it can be. There may
also be some 'ram air' effect from the forward-facing pipes, but somehow I
doubt it is significant!!

I vaguely thought about it when I fitted my washable filters, but ultimately
I decided that there are more pressing bits of Daffy that need my attention!
