My solution to all this is that I just have the machine shop do the MACHINE WORK, and I do all the tear down and reassembly. That way I am assured of the quality of the assembly work, as well as keeping costs down where I want them. I purchase my parts where I like, and they are of a quality I am familiar with. When the need arises for engine reboring, I usually have the bores mic'd, and find out how large they will need to rebore to, and I then inform them I will be getting the pistons, and will be back in a few days, but to please clean the block in the mean time. This way they get my business, as well as I getting the parts I want. I never trust a machine shop completely anymore- and being in the auto parts business, I've heard some interesting stories as well... If a shop is any good, their profit comes from the machine work, and the parts mark up is only a bit of gravy on top.
