As far as timing is concerned, the general principle seems to be the earlier the better, until you start to pink (and that is affected by what fuel you use as well as the direct attributes of the engine). Start at roughly what the book recommends, say 10-13 BTDC, then keep advancing bit by bit, going for a drive, and when the engine starts to pink or knock when you floor the throttle in high gear, low revs, then back off a couple of degrees and that's your perfect timing.
It's worth getting the timing right before you touch the carb settings.
