If I were in your position, I'd be seriously looking at converting the car to negative. It's a reasonably tricky job, but the MkI has such a simple circuit anyway, you'll be getting off fairly lightly and then you'll be able to use off-the-shelf parts and you won't have garages cocking things up through ignorance.
