A typical hardware store doesn't carry the thread pitch necessary. Don't remember the designation, but it's not the hardware fine/coarse. I've had no problem buying boxes of the proper nuts and bolts from automotive parts stores. They carry these little boxes of nuts bolts and washers. My must commonly used fasteners are of the 1/4" size. 3/4" and 1" long. Seems like most of the car was built using these.
