After having the same problem myself, I eventually just left the gasket out. Everything ran just fine without it, there was just a little gas escape from the joint, no real increase in noise, and no MOT tester noticed or objected. Worked for me, anyway!

I'm just scared stiff that after a while I would need to replace both the downpipe and the exhaust manifold if I tried that.
