Many other manufacturers use an iron upper manifold, with a tubular lower manifold, without incident or problem. I've got & had several, Toyota and Fiat for example.
The difference between the ones that work, and the Triumph one is that the tubular lower manifold has a short pipe section that extends up into the iron manifold, protecting the exhaust gasket from being burned by the passing exhaust gasses.
It should be a simple matter to have a bit if pipe welded to the lower tubular manifold. Then you should have no problems with gasket failure.
I guess that answers my question about whether tubular inserts would cause a problem with the flow of exhaust gases. If Toyota and Fiat both design them in, there can't be any real reason for concern. Thanks, Nolan.
