As a way to protect the top when hoisting it, the foam "noodles" from the 
swimming pool are great; easy to cut, really cheap, and they hold up well.  My 
neighbor & I put up one in his garage for his Mercedes top last year with 
pulleys & rope from the hardware store, plus the noodles from Wal Mart.  Total 
cost was (maybe) $35 or $40, when you factor in the beer that he bribed me to 
help him with.
