There is a thrust washer on the main transmission shaft held in place by a steel o-ring that fits in a groove in the shaft. It holds the gears, etc, in position on the mainshaft. If the ring comes loose or the thrust washer breaks (like mine) this movement will occur. If you catch it in time the mainshaft won't get damaged. If you're like me it will.
Good luck! -----Original Message----- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Chad G. When in 3rd gear the shift lever moves around when I transfer from coasting to applying power. It started as a slight movement but has progressed to jumping in a small circular pattern. It only does it in 3rd gear. Shifting into 3rd is normal for the most part, but there has been a couple of times in the last month that it would just grind when trying to shift into 3rd. That may or may not be related. Any ideas on what would be causing the jumping shift lever? If so, is this something I need to get fixed right away or can it wait for awhile? I just had the transmission rebuilt last year due to worn syncros for 1st and 2nd. Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated. Chad Edwards 1980 Spitfire Your messages not reaching the list?
