Another info-tidbit on the USA vs. Europe driving thing: My wife's aunt and uncle recently visited the USA for the first time. He's from Greece and she's from Germany, and they live in Greece but often drive back and forth to Germany (via Italy) to visit their daughter.
While whey were here, they drove from New Jersey to Washington DC, then to Niagara Falls, and back to NJ. So that are in a good position to compare USA vs Europe driving, roads, etc. They enjoyed the trip a lot, and one of their most interesting observations was that during their travels they did not pass any serious crashes (i.e. involving ambulances, etc.). Driving a similar distance in Germany or Italy, they would have expected to see one or two.
