I assume you are talking manual cable releases.

If you don't mind spending more than forty bucks, Linhof makes the finest
ones I have ever used. You can literally tie them into a tight knot and
they still work with no resistance. They have a little metal knob that you
tighten to hold the shutter open and a clear plastic coating on the cable.
They come in different lengths. I have two. I've been using one of them
for years, and I still use it most days now. They will probably last a
lifetime. I wish I would have bought my first one sooner. I'm sure I had
already spent $30 or $40 bucks on cheap ones by the time I got the Linhof.

A cheaper alternative would be the Minolta cable release, but it's still
probably the next best one. Mine sometimes stays locked though because of
the twist-to-lock design and this is no good when you are counting a time
exposure.

I used to like Nikon AR-2 and AR-3 cable releases, but I have none left
because the last two that I had kinked and bound up at the end of the
cable. :(

My Stroboframe cable release lasted TWO days and bound up! It had no lock
either.
