FWIW, my favorite books... 1.The Mohawk That Refused To Abdicate....probably the pinnacle of rr photojournalism...great stuff done when no one else was doing anything like it.
2. The two OWLink books, which SHOULD be in everyone's library. (I agree with DelVecchio, both are works of art that go together). I particularly like the fact that Winston's work was done on his own time for his own personal satisfaction and everyone thought he was nuts. But, as the late Lucius Beebe observed, nothing legitimizes an oddball hobby like the ability to make money from it... 3. Echoes Down The Canyon. Benson's stuff is awesome...the Niles Tower stuff ought to be in the Smithsonian or someplace of equal stature. Can you imagine what would have happened if Benson and DPM would have gone on the road together? Runners up: Heartland by Greg McDonnell Locomotive 4501 by DPMorgan Backwoods Railroads of The West by Steinheimer Passing Trains by David Plowden. Photography here is good but the man is also a top notch wordsmith... I can read Plowden's narrative of a 1950s steam cab ride on a GN passenger train over and over, it's that good. Benson & Mac Gregor's California Zephyr book I won't mention the "worst rr books" because there are many. Jim "Grumpy" Gilley, I'm counting on you for a good post on this subject!!! --> SPORRS: Serious Photographers of Railroad Related Subjects X-Mozilla-Status: 0011 Content-Length: 1753
