My reference to location was not clean. What I was referring to was
the location of a particular piece of equipment not a beautifully scenic
location. I too have posted inquiries as to good photo locations in an area
I have not been before. It can cut the fat.
However, I have learned from past experience, you can have four
railfans traveling together in the same vehichal, shooting the same train,
at the same location, and all four of their pictures can be different.
After Ken Albrecht and I had traveled together on several trips, I had began
talking to him about having a slide show with two projecters and screens set
up side by side, so that we could show pictures of the same location at the
same time. Initially, he thought it was a rather lame idea. After a couple
of years of talking about it, we finally did it and the results were
extremely interesting.
Here were two guys standing almost shoulder to shoulder taking
pictures at the same time of the same train. The results were usually very
different. Without consulting, I would see the picture as a wide angle shot
and Ken would see it as a tele shot or vise versa. Ken, commented later how
interesting educational he thought it was for us to be able to compair
pictures side by side.
I would really like to be able to do this others particularly with
Dave Busse, Doug Koontz, and Dave Patch when we were together in Arizonia in
April '96. Here I was traveling with three guys who make their living
taking pictures and I found myself quite often separating myself from them
at a particular location. We were traveling in the same vehicle to the same
location and shooting the same train. Quite often, I found them standing
side by side and I would walk maybe 25 to 50 yards away to get a different
shot. Did I know or see something they didn't? Or was I making a mistake
and missing the best shot?
I would find it very interesting to see the four of us get together
with four projectors and screens to show the pictures of the trip. The
three of them being professionals, would all of their shots be similiar?
Two similiar with one different? If they are similiar, would theirs be
great and my lacking? Or would all four of us have different shots.
With Ken Albrecht, quite often I would like his picture better than
mine and vice versa. Is that because his picture was just different from
the way I saw the same shot. Or was it better compositionally? It was
probably a litttle of both. You win some, you loose some, and some are
called on account of rain!
