Hi Folks:

Most of you know that I am a b/w shooter. I also enjoy seeing quality
b/w work in print. For the last several years, TRAINS has been
publishing its salon-quality b/w photos using color separations. See
Ted Benson's article on the Sierra RR in the December issue. The
"color" printing shows the finer tones of the original b/w prints.

For comparison, look back to Benson's Sierra article in the first issue
of TRAINS ILLUSTRATED (1988). Those photos were printed in straight
b/w halftones.

This topic came up because of the references to TI on the list
recently. I located my set of 11 issues, which were neatly filed in a
library box on my living room bookshelf. I have been paging through
the mags as a source of renewed inspiration. Contemporary or classic
b/w rail photography was a frequent subject in TI.

Thanks to TRAINS for continuing this effort by publishing a quality b/w
feature every now and then.

Later,
Warren
