Numerical oddities abound, but one I thought was funny occurred after Trains
moved to its new office in Waukesha. For years, during the Morgan era, the
magazine kept playing with its old address number 1027, and it often ran
photos of locomotives bearing that number.
When the new building was being built, George Drury thought that tradition was
fun, so he talked the city and county officials to numbering that lot 21027
Crossroads Circle, the theory being "2nd 1027."
George Drury was on the phone one day with Boyd who was chiding him on picking
a number for which no locomotives in this country were numbered. I happened
to walk into the office at that point and offered the obligatory "Amtrak
coach" answer and "or a ZIP code in Maryland." Just then I checked a ZIP code
directory to find that 21027 is on the Post Office in Chase, Maryland. A
Fruedian slip?
Ya had to be there.
