From: Dave Cohen, SPORRS List Owner Greetings,
Guys, I have a request in reference to SPORRS: Please read the answers before asking the questions. I have been in Wyoming for a week. When I returned, I had 182 E-mails, mostly list mail and administrative messages. I appreciate you questions in reference to posting to the SPORRS List and the SPORRS addresses, however before firing off an E-mail to me asking about these things, please check the SPORRS Web Site. YES, the SPORRS addresses changed on the 19th of last month. All of this subscription and posting information is in the SPORRS Info File on the SPORRS Web Site. This is the same file that you were sent when you subscribed, and the one on the web is always the latest version of this file. In addition, all of the information for submitting images for the SPORRS Web Site is included in the SPORRS Image Submission Spec File. And your copyright questions about your images on the site can be answered by reading the SPORRS Copyright Notice. Where are the links to other sites on the SPORRS Web Site? I would try the LINKS link first. If you have links to add to this page, send them to me with a brief description, and I will add them for you, just like your pictures. All of these (gray) links are on the top of the SPORRS Home Page. Yes, there IS more than one page to the SPORRS Web Site! That's why it's a web site, not a web page. You click on the underlined links to visit the other pages of the site. The SPORRS 'Shot Of The Month' is to be voted on during the last week in each month. The pictures will not change during the last week of the month while you are voting on them. You send in your votes to me via E-mail. If we get enough interest in this in the future, I will make a cgi-bin vote submission form on the site. While there is no rule against it, please do not vote for your own shots. We have about 110 subscribers on the SPORRS List. I got 6 votes for the 'Shot Of The Month' last month. We will need more votes than images on the site to continue the 'Shot Of The Month' feature next month. You can vote on whatever images are current starting on the 25th of this month. Personally, I don't care one way or another if we keep the 'Shot Of The Month' feature. Remember, the SPORRS Web Site progresses and changes as a direct result of your input. The less you contribute, the less the site will be updated. Unlike a railfan magazine, none of you are paying a subscription fee. I have read much opinion on this list recently in regard to the quality of railfan publications. I can tell you this much so far: If you contribute to those magazines as much as you contribute to SPORRS, then no wonder there is not enough suitable content in those magazines to suit your needs. Those editors are often working with next to nothing, just like I am here with SPORRS. Ironic? No, just reality. I am maintaining the SPORRS Web Site for fun. No one is paying me to do so. And I don't mind doing so, but if you want to see something other than my shots (how many people complain when the 'Board' is full of Rutherford and Sanders shots?), It's pretty simple folks: then you have to send something else in. How can I compare a subscriber supported web site to a subscriber supported magazine? I think you can answer this question. The only difference other than the web, is that SPORRS costs me very little (other than time) to produce. Would you like to get paid for your image submissions to the SPORRS site? In that case, what address do I send your subscription bill to? (Insert humor here if necessary - none needed at this location). Answer to another question: There is no article with pictures on the SPORRS Traveler page yet (which I spoke of previously and which is not linked yet) because you have not submitted material (text trip report and pictures) for it yet. I know of two SPORRS subscribers that have one in the works so far though. More new features to come in the future. Thanks for the positive comments. And it looks like I have just answered about a third of the E-mail in my mailbox now. :) Look for a SPORRS web update in the next few days with many new pictures of yours. I try to use every shot that you send me, and almost all of them are usable. Great shots, guys. I look at some of them and become more inspired to get out and shoot some trains!
