Good one-day photography in the area:

Some of the best scenery in the area is at Bear Mountain NY, about 35 miles
north of Hackensack NJ. Conrail River Line on west side of Hudson River, Metro
North Hudson Line on east side. Go north from Bear Mountain Bridge on the east
side on NY Route 9D about 2 miles; make left on Manitou Station Road, which
brings you to MN tracks.

Using Metro North and Amtrak schedules, set up around Manitou when passenger
trains are scheduled. MN power is FL9's and P32's (maybe an FP10 may sneak
in); Amtrak is all P40's except for one Turbo set, though it may be through a
little too early for good shots. All MN power faces north, favoring morning
and late afternoon shots.

In between passenger trains go back to Bear Mtn Bridge, park and use pedestrian
walkway out onto the bridge for Conrail. As the day wears on the Manitou shot
loses its desireability, but by then the north facing FL9's can be shot from
the Bridge as well.

Expect 2 MN trains per hour (1 north; 1 south) 10 Amtraks in daylight.
Conrail? 4-6 trains average in daylight, but be prepared for 0-10 depending on
condition of Selkirk yard to the north, weather farther west along the Water
Level Route, and whether or not the nearby West Point Tunnel experiences
another natural clearance project (ie-tunnel roof collapse).
