I'm glad Dave clarified this list as not being for the tree-hugging Sierra club minded. While respecting the environment is one thing, whacking down a row of Johnson grass or some saplings is quite another. Does this require trespassing? Sure it does! But let's not be so pious and sanctimonious as to pretend every one of us has never trangressed railroad property boundaries!
My weapons of choice are a Shindawa weed-eater with a Tornado blade on the end. It's an awesome tool for clear cutting a swath trackside. A small bow saw has also proven indespensible, as in last summer near Matfield Green on the ATSF about 25' from the main when some cedars were just high enough to obscure the view from the top of the van. Living trackside near Tulsa has provided the opportunity to talk with several of BNSF's track gangs, and their standard response is "just don't get run over, you're saving us some work later!" Like most things we've discussed on this list, common sense always prevails.
