This has always worked the best for me as well, although I have had
occasions where a cloudy sky was a fascinating patchwork of rippled
layers of clouds with many different patterns of light and dark gray. 
If you use a film and an exposure that will capture this detail without
under exposing the train, the results can be very impressive.
