Several list subscribers asked for a clarification about setting the mailer
address that I have asked for.

Thanks for asking about the mailer/address settings and why. Below I'll
try to explain it better by using a couple of examples, also taking the
unique AOL mailer into consideration. AOL is referenced in part of the
below description and examples, but please read it anyway because the
example applies to all mail programs.

When you look at all of the incoming mail in your (in) mailbox, you see
that each mail has come from someone. This is either a name, or an E-mail
address. For Netscape Mail, Internet Mail or Outlook Express, you can set
your mailer to use your name (John Doe - or whatever words that you type on
that line), instead of your actual E-mail address ([EMAIL PROTECTED]), for
example. If John Doe set his name in his mailer, then his incoming mail
in your mailbox would be from 'John Doe', not from [EMAIL PROTECTED]
That way you can tell who's mail it is, even if they didn't type their name
in their message.

For AOL addresses, in AOL member's mailboxes, the AOL addresses are unique
because the '@aol.com' is left off, so it is just the first part of the
address (your AOL 'Screen Name'). Your AOL 'Screen Name' is not what I am
referring to here, so please read on:

In (nearly) every other type of mailer (that usually comes with a web
browser), you have an Options or a Preferences setting where you can enter
your name. When you do this, then your mail will show as being from your
name (John Doe) in other people's mailboxes, and not from your actual
E-mail address ([EMAIL PROTECTED]), for example. For John Doe, this works
fine only in this example because he used his name for his E-Mail address
(which is also his AOL 'Screen Name'), but for someone like say... 'John
Smith' who's address might be: [EMAIL PROTECTED], we have no idea who
this list (post) is (from) if he didn't set his mailer to display his real
name. So we have to reply to him like:

which is not only silly and confusing, but it's not very personal.
Additionally, when John Smith sends me slides and says "please contact me
for
more information" or "please let me know when you receive this package",
and he doesn't tell me what his E-mail address is, and his address is
actually something like: [EMAIL PROTECTED], then you can see why this is
a problem. Multiply this problem, and the above mentioned name/reply
address problem by everyone on the SPORRS list that has this name/address
problem, and you will begin to see my problem with the names and addresses.

Please try to enter your real name into your mailer (E-mail preferences) to
get your mail to display your name if possible instead of just your E-mail
address. If this is not possible, then you need to make sure that you
include your full name in any post that you send to the SPORRS list. I
suggest a signature box containing this information at the bottom of each
mail, but any way that you want to put your name on your mail is fine as
long as it's there in your list post.

AND, I MUST HAVE A NAME TO GO WITH EACH E-MAIL ADDRESS ON THIS LIST FOR MY
RECORDS, EVEN IF YOU DON'T POST TO THE SPORRS LIST.

This is THE Final Notice before the unidentifiable addresses are deleted
from this list.

Thank you for your cooperation, and for letting me provide you with this
description. Please contact me privately if you have any questions.
