Ive seen a lot of postings on Winterail and Eastrail, but have not
seen anything about Summerail, which is held in August (August 8th
this year) in the auditoriun in Cincinnati Union Terminal,
Cincinnati, Ohio. They have the same shows as the other two, and use
the hot summer to hold their event, when many serious Photographers
are not very active due to poor summer light ( haze, high sun angles
etc...) I have presented shows the last two years, and can attest to
the quality of the programs. Most of the other photographers I have
met there are usually out on the road during the great light seasons
of spring and fall, Althoug many do not share the enjoyment of
winter, and tyhe incredible quality of light on those clear but VERY
cold days that usually follow a storm system (at least up here in
Canada anyway)
I've had some failures due to the extreme cold, and cameras - and
myself - buried as a snowlpow charges past, but the results are
usually worth the pain! Keeping the cameras well wrapped with plastic
except for the lens opening usually prevents any moisture problems.
I do remember hanging on for dear life one time after climbing about
80 feet up an elm tree to get a super angle, no branches to hold on
to. The tree was about 100 feet from the tracks, but the wave of snow
went out twice that far! While I only got a minor pelting that far
up, the tree took a direct hit, and was swaying violently a good ten
feet side to side. Luckily I always hook a saftey belt up when
shooting from trees like that, and the climbing spurs did not slip -
but the shot was perfect. The wait for the plow was getting a little
tedious though, as it was about -10F with a 20 mph wind at the time,
and the wait was around 20 minutes.
