I thought I'd throw this on the table, as it applies to railfanning.

When I file my federal and state tax returns, I'll get a combined total
of over $250 in refunds. Because I traditionally spend such refunds on
myself, I have thought about buying a handheld scanner, which is legal
in NJ.

My question is this: Because the railroads will eventually switch over
to a digital communications systems in the near future, thus rendering
scanners bought for railfanning purposes useless, would it be worth my
while to invest in a scanner? A friend of mine, who lives in Orlando and
whom I'll be visiting in May, says not to buy one BECAUSE of the
impending changeover to the digital technology.
