Dieter,I am sure that scanners will continue to be a useful tool for some
time yet.? With all the monies being expended on mergers and upgrading track
(CSX and NS) and UP's merger difficulties I wouldn't look for a wholesale
overnight change in technology that would render scanners obsolete any time
soon.? I think the rr to watch for first implementation of new train
tracking and communication technology will BNSF.
Besides trains, a scanner will allow you to be informed about events your
own community by listening to your local fire, police and EMS channels.?
NOAA weather broadcasts
in themselves are almost reason enough to own a scanner.
In my experience, get the best Uniden model you can afford and upgrade the
rubber antenna to a brand called "Tuff Duck" which are available optimized
for specific frequency ranges.? About $15 or so if memory serves.
