More good (bad) points that make it a pipe dream. Hell, How about a half
scale version? Dave

Not to dash the hopes of all who would like to see a Big Boy under steam,
one has to face reality............it will cost a lot more than $2M to
refurbish and there is nowhere to run it. The UP with all their woes can't
even run the 844 except from Cheyenne to Denver later this year.
As was pointed out earlier, if it were a perfect world and UP were not in
such desperate straights, the facilities just plain don't exist. The UP
isn't going to run coal-fired steam again because of the right-of-way fire
problems caused by the 3985 after it was reborn. And, though I am not a UP
spokesman, I can almost bet money that UP will NOT run any steam on their
property that they do not own and maintain. Has anyone seen the 4449
running around on the UP since the merger? Last I heard, it is not one of
the locomotives in the UP steam stable.
Perhaps Hollywood might be involved in this rumor, but it is just another
one of the "lets-get-the-hopes-up" rumors about Big Boys that surface every
so often. I will provide a mailing address for all of those willing to put
money on this.....and I will provide decent odds. Oh yeah, I also have a
bridge in Brooklyn that I can provide at a really good deal..........
