Opinion:

Sorry to hear that you guys are still having such miserable problems with
the Kodachrome/mailer situation. I don't mean to sprinkle on your parade
again, but reading this stuff just causes me to burst out into laughter
after about four or five of these messages. I keep picturing some of you
just beating yourselves over the head with a 2x4 because you can't stop.
One question that you guys have helped me answer though, is why Kodachrome
is dying so slowly. Because there are folks out there that will continue
to shoot this stuff regardless of all else. The quality fluctuations, the
mounting problems, the turnaround time, the risk of loss in the mail and
the uncertainty of which remaining lab that your film will be sent to are
all ignored, because it is Kodachrome. Utterly amazing when you take off
the blinders and think about it.

If you cannot stop using Kodachrome, then it seems to me that it would make
more sense to find a lab with the new Kodachrome processor, and inquire
about setting up an account for yourself there, where you can send in your
film with your account number, and either be billed, or include a check.
You can work out the terms so that you use the courier of your choice, and
eliminate the USPS as a variable.

And why won't some of you do this? Perhaps the discounted mailer just too
irresistible. In this case guys, when placing price above all else, it
seems that you have no choice but to accept whatever you are given and take
whatever you can get. Therefore, it seems perfectly logical that you
should gladly learn to accept all of the known Kodachrome and mailer
problems as part of your discount mailer deal, and just bite the bullet.
Or look at alternatives.

Personally, I get my E-6 locally processed (including three lines of
imprinting) for $6.50 a 36 exp. roll (no postage or shipping costs), and I
get it back in a maximum of four hours from a lab that is fifteen minutes
away. Because it is a pro lab, and not a camera store, they use fresh
chemicals every day (and the dip-and-dunk process method to eliminate
roller scratches) and I have never had a processing problem with them in
five years. I like the plastic mounts, for reasons I mentioned before, but
if I absolutely have to have cardboard mounts, then I have another local
lab option a half hour away.

Some of you may not have all of these 'big' city options, but they are
certainly worth looking into if you are serious about trying to solve your
processing problems.

I can't say that I personally miss complaining about processing anymore.

Too many strikes against Kodak for me. If I ever have to shoot Kodachrome
again for anyone, it will go to A&I via FedEx. And I will charge that
customer a substantial 'Kodachrome handling fee' for my time and trouble.

I have more important things to worry about than where my film is and what
may be happening to it.

Regards,

Dave
