Give us the scoop.=20 To me, the best scenery and photo locations are between Rolla and Lebanon. Many, Many "S" curves and the poosibilities are almost unlimited. About a mile east of Newburg along the Little Piney River is a nice shot that No-one besdies myself knows about until now. It does requrie a hike in from Newburg and you still have to contend with the pole line line, but a lot of possibility. Of course the known spot of the highway bridge "west of Jerome, continue along the highway through town until you cross the tracks again", is a good spot. But if you park where the highway comes next to the track and hike eastward and climb up on top of one of the hills near the cuts, there are several nice shots wwith the cuts and the Gasconade River running along the tracks and far below. West of Dixon on Handcock Hill is another relatively unknown shot that has been discovered by a few. Without a map in front of me, you go west of Dixon and then turn south on I believe "NN" highway. It is a deadend highway (no other way out), but before you get to the tracks you will be able to get a nice broadside shot looking down on the train and a long vista to the south. >Also in relation to the detours up the Cuba sub while the Thayer is = >closed, the BNSF is supposed to detour over the GWWR Kansas City to St. = >Louis. The coal trains will go to West Quincy then down the River Sub. The Z's and Q's will detour through Fort Worth and Longview, Tx. on the UP to Memphis. I was approached about working as a Road Foreman in Fort Worth for the detours, then it was decided I would be put to better use photographing the work during the shutdown. So I will be off the entire two weeks of the shut down doing some photojournalism. The River Sub will probably be the place to go, if you want sheer numbers of trains and from what I have seen from shots taken from Trail of Tears State Park there is a lot of possibilities there. But most of the shots are very remote, you can't chase trains, and finding them is almost impossible if you don't know the territory. I don't. Since I will be shooting the entire shut down, I will be around but don't know where. I do intend to try and get up to the Cuba Sub at least one or two days to catch some of the detours particularly when there is a Pumpkin on the point of a train. The day and time will be based most likely on the lineup for that day. If you are interested in shooting work equipment the Thayer Sub will be the place to go. I havn't seen it, but I have been told that the P811 Concrete Tie inserter is quite impressive. Of course there will be Steel Gangs laying ribbon rail along with wood tie gangs, surfacing gangs, bridge gangs replacing four bridges, a contractor transloading concrete ties to the cars for the P811, etc. It should prove interesting. If you are planning on doing some shooting in the area, let me know and I might be able to link up with you for a day or so. >>From you pros, any suggestions on how many rolls of film I will end up shooting in two weeks? I shot 60 rolls in two weeks on Tennessee Pass last June and I was only shooting trains. For this, I will be shooting workers, equipment, before and after shots of the bridges, etc. Your comments will be welcome! Charlie Dischinger - Somewhere in the Ozarks.
