Well, if you look at the fact that the tracks curve off to the left, you have
to realize that the signal lights are probably aligned to point to the other
end of this curve, which would make the path of the light through the
location where the light is reflected from the hood doors of the engine.

Lights within a signal head can be aligned a good bit to one side or 
the other and up and down -- for maximum visibility from a distance.

The alignment is not so critical up close, where the light is much 
brighter.  So, the lights are typically aligned for best visibility 
somewhere further away -- in this case at a point around the curve.
