Why not use "avocational." It implies an additional work or employment
beyond one's regular situation but goes far beyond the daisey picker
connotation of amatuer. This useful discussion reminds me of  a bumper
sticker I saw recently: "Real Mucisians Have Day Jobs."

Regarding the ethics and the esthetics of photography take a look at an
article in the May issue of ATLANTIC MONTHLY: "Photography in the Age of
Falsification." by Kenneth Brower. Its primary focus, no pun intended, is
on the use of digital imaging to enhance or "create" nature photographs and
involves some of the most sacred names in the field going all the way back
to Saint Ansel.
