Yeah, tell him he's welcome to get on this list if he wants some
opinions about his magazine directly from its contributors.

BTW, half a stop dark exposed slides are not a problem for a good prepress
shop, it's better than the opposite with blown highlights (you can't
recover image data that doesn't exist - but I try to all of the time
anyway).  The printing problem you refer to is 'dot gain' not set correctly
for the chosen paper stock.  But even with everything calibrated correctly,
a paper publication is only as good as the paper it is printed on.
