Besides the great compression it offers, the 300mm is becoming more important because so many places are "off-limits" these days. A lot of railroad facilities here in the northeast have become fenced-in, and security has increased. You need a long lens to reach into yards and junctions from public property. Nobody wants to get arrested for trespassing and have that on their record forever. While the slide shooters require super-fast lenses, print shooters can get by with an aftermarket 300mm f5.6 and use asa 400 film. A tripod is required, no matter what shutter speed you use. These long lenses are hard to keep steady on a subject, even if it is standing still.
