Yes, absolutely true, but ......I just watched the Pentrex video that
features Richard Steinheimer shooting trains on Donner.  He dutifully
used his tripod at some locations, but equally often he was standing
or sitting like a good rifleman squeezing off shots.

He could have had a really long and heavy 50mm lens on, but it looked
more like a 200 or perhaps 300mm.  He could have been shooting really
fast film, but he did mention color slides - at least I think he did.

My point is simply this..  A tripod will get you a steadier picture
with most good slide film, but there are lots of cases where the
moment calls for a steady hand and a bit of luck.  Personally I have
found that a sturdy monopod matches the kind of shooting that I like.
I lose a few pictures, but then I don't lug a tripod around all day
either.
