All right, Enough people have complained to me about how the (any) web site with photographs looks on the America Online browser, and also a second unrelated problem about the SPORRS mail errors that they have been experiencing with free mail-only packages like Juno and Hotmail. First AOL: America Online filters its bandwidth down to a tenth of what is standard, so when you are using the AOL browser and viewing images, you cannot see an image file on the Internet in its intended higher resolution. No matter what your screen res and color depth are set at, your browser will display photographs like they are only at 256 colors because of this. They will look jagged, banded, spotchy, and everything else you have been describing to me. They do this for several reasons, one of which is to save bandwidth because they have too many subscribers, and not enough capacity (see: http://www.bestparties.com/join/article3.html for more info on this). You CAN install another browser software on your computer, like Netscape for example, and log on through AOL and then minimize it and open the other browser. You need to have your screen res set at least to 800x600 or 1024x768, and your color depth set higher than only 256 colors (16 million, 24 bit or 32 bit true color if possible with your video card) so you can see an image on your computer like a real photograph! And Juno and all the other free mail programs: There are so many mail related problems with these services that when your mail affects my SPORRS list mailing program and delivers error messages to my screen, when you are over quota on messages and your mail constantly bounces back to me as undeliverable, or when I get jumbled and random advertisement headers and footers from your mailer, I am forced to just delete your address from SPORRS to solve the problem. Please consider the suitability of your mail provider when subscribing to any Internet mailing list.
