I have a 72,000 sq. ft. 44'-0 high warehouse that is going to be used for
34'-0 open shelf rack storage auto parts. Storage consist of engines,
transmissions, axles, radiators, steel & aluminum wheels, metal doors,
hoods, windows, tail and head lights in cardboard boxes, and plastic front
and back bumpers. My concern is the bumpers. They are wrapped individually
with shrink-wrap to protect them. They will be stored on the 1st, 2nd and
3rd level of the racks to maximum of 16'-0 high and limited to about a 10%
area of the building. The other 16'-0 to 18'-0 of storage will be the metal
and/or boxed auto parts. All products are new.

I would like to use the K25.2 ESFR fire sprinkler at 40 psi to protect the
warehouse to eliminate the rack sprinklers. Owner is dead set against rack
sprinklers. The K25 will protect all the commodities except the bumpers.
With the bumpers being limited to 16'-0 high and 10% of the building area,
are they a concern? If so, what would be the best way to protect that area?
The owner could limit the bumper storage to 8' or 12' and increase his area
of racks for their storage. The problem is the K25 is not listed to protect
uncartoned unexpanded plastics in a building higher than 40'-0, which the
whole buildings is. So that is the problem, how do you deal with the
bumpers?
