Then what about the difference in clearance between the two types. 

In one particular case I found the upright at 5in and the pendent at 14in
clearance, next to each other.

No restrictions that I am aware of.

If memory serves me right, FM made an earlier statement  that  
localized upright ESFR sprinklers could be used within an otherwise  
pendent ESFR system.  That had to break the heart of the mfg that  
developed the first upright (since they are far superior in regard to  
obstructions).
