Perhaps the AFSA should start a program recognizing those who's performance make's these sort of positive stories possible ?. Story below; John Drucker Fire Protection Subcode Official (AHJ) Red Bank, New Jersey ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----- Michael Hooper Topeka Capital-Journal (Kansas) THE CAPITAL-JOURNAL The Topeka Frito-Lay plant was out of production for several hours Wednesday following an early-morning fire. Topeka Fire Department officials hadn't released a damage estimate or a cause of the fire, but firefighters reported the building's automatic sprinkler system activated and contained the blaze to its area of origin. No injuries were reported, but American Medical Response responded to the alarm and assisted with monitoring vital signs of firefighters, who were wet and working in extreme cold. Aurora Gonzales, spokeswoman for Frito-Lay, said there were about 150 employees in the plant at 4236 S.W. Kirklawn when the fire started at about 6:10 a.m. She said there was some damage to the plant's product and initially estimated the plant wouldn't operate for about 10 hours. However, Frito-Lay manufacturing manager Mark Brinker said production and warehouse operations were up and running late Wednesday afternoon. The Salvation Army and the Kansas Capital Area Chapter of American Red Cross responded with food and warm beverages for firefighters. Because of the size of the structure, the amount of smoke coming through the roof and the potential occupant load, the first firefighters on the scene in the morning issued a second full alarm. One full alarm response consists of two fire engine companies, two truck companies and a chief officer. Frito-Lay Inc. employs about 820 workers at the Topeka plant, where it manufactures Cheetos, Doritos, Lays Potato Chips and Tostitos. Last fall, Frito-Lay announced plans to hire about 50 more workers as part of a multimillion-dollar expansion project in Topeka. Frito-Lay will expand operations in Topeka to meet growing demand for its health and wellness products, including Sun Chips, which are made with NuSun sunflower oil, which is high in monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fatty acids and has less than 10 percent of saturated fatty acids and zero grams of trans fatty acids, Frito-Lay said.
