Thanks for the prompt and articulate responses. I agree with Rich that
if there is only one stair (and there is) then a second standpipe would
be a waste. That's one for the books, and AHJ and a contractor on the
same page. Finding the thing in the dark twenty floors up would probably
be more dangerous than just letting the concrete forms burn.

Subject: Re: Temporary Standpipe

Good question, one I am glad to have never been asked.

Assuming you are refering to the IFC section 1413 Construction
Standpipe, I can see two different interpretations.

Firstly, the section only requires at least one standpipe, but does
reference section 905, which one could ascertain includes meeting the
hose reach llimitations. In addition, NFPA 14 (2007) section 12.3
requires the construction standpipe to meet the standard for hose
connections, presumably including spacing.

However, just above section 1413 of the IFC is section 1411 "Means of
Egress", which only requires one stairway, presumably regardless of
floor size. So given the fact that only one stair is required during
construction it would be of debatable value to install additional hose
connection in the middle of a floor under construction.

So our interpretation in Seattle is that there are no hose reach
requirements for the temporary standpipes, but I could not easily reach
that determination through NFPA 14, but through a look at all of the
constrcution safeguard requirements in the IFC.

The foregoing is the opinion of the writer alone, and does not
necessarily represent the intent of the NFPA 14 Technical Committee, nor
constitute a formal or informal interpretation of the standard.

Forum (Steve or Rich),

Must all portions of a floor be within 200 ft. reach of a temporary
standpipe valve?
