The discussion here is there is an increased concern that risers inside
units would not be accessible to the neighbors in the event of an accidental
discharge or actual fire. Then FD would have to invade another's privacy to
shut off the system if no one was home usually causing more physical damage
to the property.

This is of course, units that are built similar to townhouses even if they
are apts or condos. Some of the AHJ's are requiring individual control
valves therefore 13D seems reasonable and you lose the requirement for the
balcony heads in Type V construction.

Subject: RE: 3 unit 13D follow-up

Well they're in our state code so I expect they're everywhere here.
I know I've done a ton of them, flats and townhouse style.
I don't use a common service unless it's a single family, just my
preference.
All CPVC, 2 head design, FDC and BFP. Our FDC's must be within 150' of a
hydrant.
Separates seem more expensive anyway, not to mention annunciation.
Tom

Are you talking about townhomes or flats? If townhomes, we have
allownaces in our codes allowing 13D's in townhomes, with no limit on
number of units. And yes there is an FDC every 30 ft. or so along the
building.

Thank you to those who responded to the original post. However, I did
not get a response regarding other cities allowing the 3 unit to install
13D in each unit, anyone out there know of any?

Also, how would others protect this building if not by the above
mentioned? 13R with FDC?

Looking forward to your responses.
