George is practicing skating on some mighty thin ice. The problem would be that it isn't an existing system until AFTER it is accepted.

This requirement has been in the standard a long time so whatever the basis, it is lost as ancient history. A reasonable assumption (since it is allowed for existing systems, thus must still work) is that the 1/2 NPT unnecessary restricts the flexibility of a system that already has a higher flow demand than typically provided by K 5.6.

I wouldn't see the harm in asking.
You could also go inand install the k5.6 heads, re-run the calcs, and then
retro the 1/2 K8 heads in accordance with the code into what is now an
"existing" system.

Subject: 1/2" thread - 8 K sprinklers

NFPA 13 clearly states that we can not use 8.0 k heads with 1/2" threads in new installations. I assume there are reasons for this but I do not know
them.

BUT, we have a new job with pipe on the floor and 1/2" welded outlets for 5.6 k sprinklers. The problem is we ran into some lights and are having to move some pipe which blows our calcs. (Our designer made a mistake and did
not realize that the lights are not hanging, but are mounted to the
purlins.)

We had in excess of 10% cushion and now we have -5%. If we use the 8K heads
we are fine.

The other option is to reorder all of the branchline piping 1 size larger.

We reflowed the hydrants to confirm the water and lost 10 psi residual to
make matters worse.

Does anyone on the committee have any input before I ask the AHJ to consider
this change?
