It was treated water in the sprinkler loop, not the cooling tower water. The pipes I saw looked quite good for 22 years of service.

Most of the heads were on drops or arm overs so there was considerable distance from the flowing water to the sprinkler. I doubt that there was much temperature effect on the heads.

But cooling tower water should not have been inside this part of the
system. There's usually two separate water loops. The CT water should
only have been going through a water cooled condensing unit, then the
chilled water or hot water loop would be a closed circulating loop going
through the condenser and boiler. So any MIC or other nasty stuff from
the tower should not have been able to get into the sprinkler/hvac
supply loop.

I wonder what effect circulating 40-50deg chilled water through the
sprinkler lines would on the reaction time of the sprinklers versus them
being at ambient temperature. Anyone know?
