This is just a comment on a previous thread where I was looking for information on the restriction against using 1/2" thread, 8.0 k sprinklers in new installations.
The results were that the AHJ and myself contacted NFPA. I was told that if a 3rd party, a PE in this case, approved the use then it should be considered an "equivalency". He also researched the issue and believes the intent was to serve as a benchmark for testing and development of new sprinklers back in 1985. The AHJ was told by the same person that code states it therefore all NFPA could do was read it and tell him what it states. He did NOTHING to reiterate what he told me about the intent or the 3rd party equivalency, and YES he was aware that this was the same situation. End result is that the AHJ required us to reorder the pipe with 3/4" outlets. Personally, I am frustrated that the entity we PAY to belong to, PAY for the code books from can not help an AHJ make a reasonable decision whether in our favor or not when we need it. Thank you AFSA and other forum members who help in thousand of cases like this to give good information and proper guidance.
