There are no listings/approvals for wax coating a fast response thermal element. Quick response sprinklers that utilize a 3 mm glass bulb thermal element are listed as corrosion resistant with the white polyester coating, since the glass bulb itself is inert to corrosion. Otherwise, sprinklers having a fast response thermal element (i.e. residential, quick response, QREC and ESFR) cannot be wax coated. Salvatore Izzo, P.E. The Reliable Automatic Sprinkler Company

The original question came from a test question someone had on a licensing ordeal. We had never heard of a wax coated res. And were just curious to see what might be out there. The AHJ is always very understanding that the spray and intent of QR is different than Res. listed, but they have always allowed them because they would rather have a low maint. sprinkler in some areas, than a system that was turned off by the owner for "leaks" rust drips or other aesthetic reasons. Also in the case of the Sauna's, there are no Res. heads that can take the heat. We typically use a 350'F heads.
