Jay:

Deflectors of spray sprinklers (and most if not all EC's) may be
positioned up to 12" below smooth ceilings, and some sprinklers are
specifically listed for greater distances. So if it's convenient, you
could place sprinklers on the soffit and continue the pattern out into
8'0" ceiling across the rest of the room.

Subject: Sprinklers in Soffit?

I have a school with classrooms that have a ceiling of 8'. there is a
soffit along one wall that is 10" lower than the ceiling and 36" wide.
I am
drawing a blank as to whether I need sprinklers in the soffit.
8.6.4.1.1.3
says that if the difference in heights in the ceiling is less than 36",
I
can consider it a flat ceiling. 8.6.5.1.2 (3) limits the soffit to 30"
in
width. I can comply with table 8.6.5.1.2 and be less than 7'6 away from
the
wall. So can I eliminate sprinklers in the soffits?
