There are great benefits to replacing 3/4" end of branch line piping with 1"
piping, especially since there are reasons the standard doesn't allow 3/4"
steel pipe any longer.

It's easily plugged with minimal amounts of debris and easily ecluded over
time. I agree with you Rick, its a good idea and a prudent practice to replace
older technology with newer. We know what we know when we know it and if you
can convince a client to help himself make a good decision based on sound
advise, the goals of fire and life safety are being met.

NFPA 25 is still a relatively new document and it's predecessors (NFPA 13A and
14A) didn't prescribe anything - and as such were not adoptable as codes.

The pre-cursor to NFPA 25 requirements as they relate to internal condition
inspections and flushing were found in a small green covered pamplet printed by
the Insurance industry. I have a copy somewhere but don't recall the name of
it exactly. Anyway, the ISO offices used to send notices out to building
owners with dry systems 50 + years old, requiring the internal condition
inspection. That document and ISO did require the 3/4" ends of branch line to
be upgraded to 1".
