(1) You are correct. 8.10.7.1.2 (02) does read that way. However, if you look at table 8.10.7.1.3 it is clear that the intent is you cannot have any obstructions below the deflector within 8 feet. If the bottom of your soffit is above the deflector, it can be used.
(2) I asked Tyco this question, (re. soffits along the far wall) sometime back, as they copy this table in their installation manual. I asked them, what if the obstructioon at the far wall is only 1/2" wide, like a decorative moulding? They replied yes it is an obstruction as per NFPA, if it is within 8 feet. As I requested this information in writing, I asked whether they could reply in writing. Then they said that they wouldn't as it is an NFPA requirement. Anyway having said that, this issue was discussed at length in this forum, and the consensus (as per my judgement) was one needs to use some reason when using this section. Really. My hope is that I'm missing something because I'd really like to use sidewalls on this particular project. So, anybody care to comment? In regards to residential sidewalls, section 8.10.7.1.2 (02) says not to install residential sidewalls within 8' of a light "or similar obstructions." It doesn't provide any exceptions, such as the light being only 4" deep and the sidewall installed 6" down from the ceiling. It simply says you can't do it. Is a soffit along the wall opposite the sidewall considered a "similar obstruction"? I have a project where a 24" deep soffit is installed along 1 wall of the bedroom and along 1 wall of the living area (for ductwork). Disregarding the soffits, sidewalls would work wonderfully. If I consider the soffit a "similar obstruction", that pretty much eliminates the use of sidewalls. Am I missing something? Am I misinterpreting the intent of 8.10.7.1.2?
