Having spent the first 15 years of my career with FM in the heart of
furniture company, I dealt with lots of spray booths and spray booth fires.
The purpose of the sprinkler in the exhaust stack is to control fires in
overspray that accumulates on the inside of the stack. As there are
typically joints in the stack that can open up when exposed to a fire,
you need the sprinklers to prevent flames coming from inside the stack
impinging on the roof deck. To do this, you need to put the sprinkler
at or just below the level of the roof deck. This is the way it's been
done for years.

Dewayne,
I had an AHJ pull the Uniform Mechanical code once and told me I had to have
the sprinkler within 36" of the top of the exhaust stack. The exhaust duct
stood 60" above the roof. I had to put a little A.F. loop in with a sprig-up
in the exhaust duct. I don't have the UMC and can't remember the section.
I just remember the sting.

Subject: Sprinklers in paint booth exhaust ducts
Anyone know where to find design information on the placement of heads
in paint booth exhaust ducts?
I can't seem to find it in NFPA 33.
Thanks,
Dewayne
